How to Jump-Start a Car

You will need jumper cables and a vehicle to use as a jumper cable when you are getting ready to jump-start your car’s battery. You can use this equipment to jump start your car in Oklahoma City or Tulsa.

  • Place the car with a full battery in it and park it near the dead one. Before you move on, engage both parking brakes.
  • Locate each battery by opening both hoods. Sometimes, the plastic hood might cover the battery.
  • Identify both the positive (red), and negative (black), terminals of each battery. You can proceed if they are clean and free from corrosion.
  • Connect the red clamp to a positive terminal of the dead battery
  • Uncoil the cable and connect the other clamp to the positive terminal of the live vehicle.
  • Connect the black end to the negative terminal while you are still facing the good battery.
  • Connect the last black cable clamp to the car with the dead battery.
  • After you have made sure that all connections are in the correct places, turn the engine on and let it run for a while. This will charge the dead battery.
  • The dead battery can be used to start your car. You might need to contact AAA if your car won’t start.
  • Remove the cables carefully if the car does not start immediately. Do not touch the ends until you have removed all of them.
  • Jump-starting a car should take at least ten minutes so that the battery can charge. You can turn off the other car right away.

Be aware that jump-starting a car can cause flammable gases. Here are some tips to keep you safe.

  • Do not attempt to jump-start a battery that is damaged or leaking.
  • Jump leads that have been damaged should not be used.
  • If the jump leads get too hot, you should stop using them.
  • Be sure to remove all dangling clothing, such as a scarf or tie, before you begin. It could get caught in moving parts of the engine.
  • Avoid letting any metal objects touch your car’s batteries. This could spark the battery and cause it to explode. This includes jewelry, watches, bracelets, clippings, and other metal objects.
  • Avoid smoking or allowing naked flames near any battery.
  • Do not remove the jump leads when the engine is running. This could cause severe damage to the electronics of your car.

How often should you change a car battery?

Battery life is between 5 to 7 years on average. However, you should replace a car battery if it shows signs of deterioration.

It’s worth getting it checked if the battery is more than five years old or seems to be having trouble starting the car. It’s safer to be safe than sorry.

To safely jump start, follow these steps:

  1. Get your jumper cables out.A good idea is to purchase a set jumper cables and keep them in your trunk. You will need to find someone who is not only willing to help you but also has jumper cables.
  2. Put both vehicles in Park or Neutral, and turn off the ignition.Both parking brakes should be engaged.
  3. Attach one of these red clips to your battery’s positive terminal.It may have “POS” or “+” written on it.
  4. Attach the second red clip to your car’s positive terminal.
  5. Attach one of the black clips onto the negative terminal of the or battery.
  6. Attach the last black clip on an unpainted surface of your car other than the battery.You can use one of the metal struts to keep the hood open.
  7. Turn on the engine and allow it to run for a few seconds.
  8. Start your car.Make sure the cables are connected properly and let the other person start the engine for five minutes. Next, try starting your car again. Your battery might be failing to start your car if it doesn’t.
