Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures announced that Venom: Let There Be Carnage would be rated PG-13, just like the first film of the symbiote series.

Surprise move: The comic book adaptation starring Tom Hardy will premiere in theaters on Oct. 1, rather than the expected date. “Venom,” the sequel to the original, was originally scheduled to debut in October 2020. However, it was delayed due to pandemics to move it to June 2021, then to late September, and finally to Oct. 15.

What is Venom 2 Let There Be Carnage?

This month twelve years ago, Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanyotta, an Italian American singer, songwriter and actress, wrote a song about the erotic pleasure and vampiric pain that comes with loving someone who is bad for you. It’s doubly terrible if this person is also your best friend.

“I want your horror. I want your design. “Cause you’re criminal as long as I’m yours,” she sang in her No. The No. 1 hit “Bad Romance a>” channels Hitchcock just a few bars later. “I want your psycho, your vertigo shtick. Want you in my rear window, baby, you’re sick.”

It is not known if Germanotta sang about an alien symbiote. After watching Venom, I believe she should have.

Director Andy Serkis directed Venom, also known as Venom 2. It is the grim sequel to 2018,’s $850m hit story about Eddie Brock who is taken over by an alien form. Venom, the alien that is named after him, is more of a parasite than a being. He must be bonded with another human in order to live. When Venom meets Eddie, played by Tom Hardy and becomes more dependent on Eddie for his survival, Venom is less concerned with utility and more about emotional attachment. It’s a love story.

This foundation is solidified, Serkis’s sequel focuses more on the Eddie-and Venom dynamic and shows us the life beyond the honeymoon phase in alien-human bonding. Eddie’s world doesn’t allow for a human-symbiote partnership that is fully mutually acceptable. Eddie and Venom hide in the metaphorical closet, fearing exclusion or even imprisonment. Eddie pretends Venom isn’t there, which causes tension in their relationship as Venom’s needs and wants — chocolate and human flesh — become too overwhelming to ignore. Both Eddie and Venom feel the emotional toll.

Maybe it’s just part of the job. You might not be able to save the world if there are competing priorities. Wonder Woman, Captain America and Iron Man have all made this point. Perhaps superheroes are meant to be lonely. Venom 2dares us to wonder what might happen if super heroes weren’t so isolated. It could be, as Germanotta said, a destined romance — but it’s still a romance.

What Venom 2, Let There be Carnage is all About

Venom 2 is all about finding your soulmate and the exchange of long-term relationships.

Serkis sets Venom 2 at an energizing pace. I find the 90-minute duration to be generous. There is no exposition, world-building or long villain speeches about motives. It’s high-velocity Venom through a plot about serial killers who are accidentally infected with a variant strain the symbiote.

Venom2 is a rock-and-roll super-hero flick that doesn’t care about camp or cheese. It’s about love and intimacy, and building on , the rom-com heart of the first movie.

Eddie and Venom are still living in San Francisco’s one-bedroom apartment. (Don’t quote me, it could be a huge studio). After a brief stint as independent viral video reporter in the previous movie, Eddie has returned to print journalism. In Venom‘s world, print journalism thrives. Another peculiarity in this world is that print journalists don’t seem to have editors and can only answer to themselves.

Cletus Kasady, an alleged serial killer, contacts Eddie to request a one-on-1 interview. Kasady, played by Woody Harrelson is a loony and maniacal. Because he speaks in haikus, this is telegraphed to viewers. We also learn that he once told Eddie that he electrocuted his mother and suffocated her grandmother when he was younger. Kasady is unaware that Eddie hides Venom from the world. His one-on-one interview with Kasady — Kasady’s attempt to get fame and indulge in his love for Eddie — is a tag team encounter with an alien symbiote who is hyper-intelligent.

Venom’s prowess makes Eddie and Venom discover Kasady’s burial ground, and Eddie is instantly famous. Their success brings them into conflict.

Although Venom may be able to enjoy the benefits of Eddie and his collaboration success, he also needs more than television sets and bylines. Venom must eat human brains in order to maintain his intergalactic metabolism. Eddie is unable to give them those and Venom only accepts chicken brains attached to chickens.

Even though Eddie is a rising journalist star, he still can’t make himself attractive enough to Anne (remembered in Let There be Carnage by Michelle Williams) who also reprises her wig of the first movie. She is the only one who can understand Eddie and his relationship to Venom. Unfortunately, she has moved on to be with her faithful boyfriend, Dr. Dan (Reid Scott). She is well aware that Eddie has limited space in his life.

Their fight over cracking the Kasady Case and Anne is only one symptom of a larger problem between Eddie, Venom. Both cannot meet the needs the other. Eddie doesn’t speak Venom’s love language, fresh medullas obslongata. Venom is unable to comprehend the limits of Eddie’s humanity and why he prefers to live as a tabloid reporter rather than living like a god. Eddie and Venom get along so well that Eddie can tell Venom he’s a loser parasite, but Venom knows he can hurt Eddie if he destroys the possessions Eddie finally earned.

Although Kasady transforms into Carnage, the movie’s villain, the true villain of Venom2 is the conflict between Eddie and Venom. Eddie and Venom must learn to love one another more than defeating the villain.

This strange romance is explored by Serkis and Venom2, who tap into an emotional territory that superhero movies rarely explore, regardless of the studio. While heroes often have boyfriends and girlfriends, these significant others are rarely more than accessory. Their relationships often feel hollow because they aren’t very interesting characters.

The focus of superhero films is often on a global threat and the heroes who must defeat it. We rarely see the loved ones of heroes or their needs and wants. It’s also difficult to understand how those impulses and instincts can affect their relationships and how they interact with each other. This is a small slice of humanity that is missing from those who are charged with saving the world.

What’s so Special about Venom?

The most striking and unique aspect of both Venom movies is their hope for companionship.

Most superhero movies are focused on the themes of personal sacrifice and helping others save the world. Venom and Venom 2 highlight, in their own unique and often raunchy ways that you can find someone who completes and makes you stronger, happier, and better than you could ever imagine. Venom2 has a lower storytelling stakes. The goal is to live a happier life. Finding your soulmate, whether platonic, romantic, or symbiote alien parasite, can be as important as any other thing in the world.

Venom is free to tell what is primarily an absurd relationship story because it is self-contained. In contrast to Marvel’s infinitely interconnected cinematic universes, the Venom movies with all its camp can exist on their own in their own world. It is difficult to imagine that a typical MCU movie would make space for Michelle Williams to sincerely say “I’m sorry about Venom,” just as you would offer condolences and ask Tom Hardy in seance fashion if Venom is in the room. Venom can take chances with its humor, scale, and tone by not being part of anything larger.

In neither Venom movie is earth or its citizens ever in imminent danger. Eddie and his symbiote are not the only obstacles in the way of humanity’s total destruction. Venom2 Carnage doesn’t seem to be an insurmountable force. The movie never suggests that he can be stopped by more superheroes. Both Carnage/Kasady as well as Eddie/Venom look like they would be content not interfacing with the outside world again if they had their partners and endless supply of brains.

It would be great if Marvel and DC allowed these stories to be told about their heroes. They could also approach romance and deep friendship with these heroes to explore the effects of being superhuman on people’s relationships and to consider the consequences.

That was what Marvel’s Disney+ series WandaVision showed.Wanda Maximoff, who channeled her grief over Vision into a romantic fantasyland that brought Vision back and harmed hundreds of others. Although the storyline had its faults, it made Maximoff’s character richer, more sympathetic, flawed, and more human than in previous movies. It was clear that, as much as we love superheroes saving the world from harm, it is their personal and social lives that make them so popular.

While I’m nostalgic about Eddie’s relationship with Venom, it’s important to remember that Venom’s world is not complete. Sony may have been convinced by the financial success and projections of the second to create a Spider-Verse in which Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will collide just like in their source comics . It’s nice to see a movie about a superhero that recognizes the dangers of the world, even if it has literal superpowers.
